Workshop on AI-Based Course Planning Held by Communication Science Department

In response to the growing demands of digital transformation in higher education, the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Riau convened a Workshop on AI-Based Course Planning on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The event was held in the DPH Meeting Room, FISIP Universitas Riau.

Designed to enhance lecturers' competencies in integrating emerging technologies into academic planning, the workshop brought together faculty members from the Department of Communication Science. The primary objective was to provide practical knowledge and tools for designing more adaptive, data-driven, and efficient course syllabi using artificial intelligence.

The workshop featured two guest speakers. Taufiqurahman, S.Sos., M.Soc.Sc., presented a session on utilizing AI—particularly through text-based prompting—to support the development of structured and outcome-oriented course plans. Meanwhile, Sesdia Angela, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., delivered a hands-on demonstration on using AI-generated visual media, including illustrations and infographics, to enrich learning materials. This session focused on the use of generative tools such as Dreamina and prompt engineering techniques for creating relevant educational visuals.

In his opening remarks, the Head of the Department, Dr. Rumyeni, S.Sos, M.Sc., emphasized the significance of AI integration from the earliest stages of curriculum design. “We encourage our lecturers to incorporate AI not only during instruction, but also in the initial planning phase. AI can support the development of learning outcomes, instructional strategies, and assessments tailored to the needs and characteristics of students,” he stated.

Participants were given the opportunity to explore AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Dreamina in guided practical sessions, allowing them to directly apply the tools in redesigning their own course plans.

The event received positive responses from attendees, who acknowledged the importance of adapting to digital innovation in academic settings. The workshop marks a key milestone in the department’s broader agenda to foster digital literacy and pedagogical innovation at Universitas Riau.
